You might think it’s cute – that big, wet and slobbery tongue reaching out from your canine’s jaw and affectionately lapping at your face.

But what if I told you there was something quite sinister about it?

No, I’m not saying your beloved Fido is trying to harm you. Your little (or big) furry friend genuinely is trying to display affection.

Too bad the same can’t be said for all the bacteria on the dog’s tongue.

Are dog mouths really cleaner than human mouths?

No. That’s a total myth.

Author and dog expert Marty Becker puts it quite well when he says:

“All you have to do is look, watch, smell and you’ll realize that is not true.

They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end.”

John Oxford, professor of virology and bacteriology at the Queen Mary University in London, expanded further on just how much bacteria your dog’s muzzle and mouth can carry.

“It is not just what is carried in saliva. Dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses and germs of all sorts.”

Those viruses and germs can cause conditions that can be damaging to human health, as one U.K. woman learned the hard way.

She contracted an infection from her Italian greyhound’s saliva. She didn’t even realize anything was wrong until she was on the phone with a relative and began to notice her speech slurring.

By the time the ambulance arrived, she was slumped in her chair, her health degrading rapidly. She recovered with two weeks of intensive care and plenty of antibiotics.

Blood tests showed the infection was due to capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteria, which is commonly found in the mouths of dogs and cats.

She’s not alone – there have been 13 similar cases throughout the UK.

That’s not the only disease Fido can pass onto you through dog kisses.

There’s also ringworm infection.

A ringworm infection is one of the easiest diseases for your dog to pass onto you from smooching. If the ringworm bacteria is around their mouth and you engage in kissing, bam. Ringworm for you too.

MRSA, anyone?

MRSA infection in humans, which produce lesions like the unsightly one above, can be caused by as little as one lick from your dog.

Dogs can carry around this bacteria with very little effect on their own health but when an owner comes into contact with it… Yeah, it’s a bad time.

Staphylococcus Aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is similar to MRSA. Similar bacteria (which can be found in Fido’s mouth) cause it but that bacteria is not as resistant to treatment.

I’d still want to avoid it altogether to be honest, I don’t know about you.

Capnocytophaga Canimorsus

This one’s really bad. How bad? Let’s put it this way – I’m easing you into it with some text before I drop the picture on you.

This man was told by his doctor that his capnocytophaga canimorsus infection was caused by a dog licking his open wound.

His feet were even worse. One had to be partially amputated.

We’ll skip those photos.

Are you going to catch a disease from your dog that leaves you with one foot and disfigured hands? Probably not.

Georgia Bill Would Ban Wearing Hijabs In Public


A Georgia lawmaker is aiming to amend a state law originally designed to prohibit men from wearing Ku Klux Klan (KKK) hoods to also ban Muslim women from wearing hijabs and niqabs in public.

On Nov. 15, Republican state Rep. Jason Spencer of Georgia filed House Bill 3, which will be up for consideration in the 2017 session. The legislation would tweak the state’s anti-masking statute to include Muslim women who wears hijabs or niqabs, AJC reports.

The state statute was originally passed to forbid Georgia men from donning KKK hoods and operating anonymously. Spencer’s proposed bill would adjust the wording of the statute to include women.

The proposed bill would also place a ban on Muslim women from wearing a veil in their driver’s license photographs. Spencer has asserted that his legislation is designed to prohibit Muslim women from wearing veils while driving and endangering public safety.

While that may be the Georgia lawmaker’s intention, his legislation could lead to Muslim women being barred from wearing veils or headscarves in any public places.

“For the purposes of this subsection, the phrase ‘upon any public way or property’ includes but is not limited to operating a motor vehicle upon any public street, road, our highway,” House Bill 3 reads. By not limiting the rule to operating inside of a motor vehicle, Spencer’s legislation could be applicable to Muslim women merely walking down a public street.

The hijab is a head scarf that conceals a woman’s hair. In the Muslim world, head scarves are often stylized and used as fashion accessories. Meanwhile, the niqab is a veil that conceals the face but with a slit for the eyes to allow vision, according to The New York Times.

Muslim women generally wear a hijab or niqab to signal their religious identity.

Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Georgia has signaled that his organization is already prepared to advocate against Spencer’s bill, deeming it to be religious discrimination.

“The bill is a bad solution to a nonexistent problem,” Mitchell told The Huffington Post. “[These Muslim women] are not endangering themselves or anyone else.”

Referencing the election of President-elect Donald Trump, Mitchell asserted that nothing has changed about the importance of civil rights in the United States.

“We have a new president, but not a new Constitution,” Mitchell continued. “The bill is unnecessary and unconstitutional, and we intend to oppose it if it goes forward.”

CAIR has found that Muslim women in Georgia have been experiencing harassment and bullying following the presidential election. In one incident, a Muslim teacher was allegedly handed a note by a student asking her to hang herself using her head scarf as a noose.

Male Engineering Student Writes Letter Explaining Why Women Are Not His Equal


Women have been working hard for decades to be treated as equals. As much progress as they’ve made, sexism still exists. In the workplace and in other aspects, many people still see women as inferior. The difference in treatment hardly goes unnoticed. Jared Mauldin, a senior at Eastern Washington University, observed the difference first hand. After noticing the unequal treatment, he decided to speak out.

Jared is majoring in mechanical engineering. In his classes, he noticed that his female peers were treated differently than him. Especially those who happen to be STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) majors. The 34-year-old wrote a letter to his school’s student newspaper, The Easterner, addressing all of the women in his engineering classes.

Jared’s Letter

He begins the letter, “While it is my intention in every other interaction I share with you to treat you as my peer, let me deviate from that to say that you and I are in fact unequal.”

If you’re a woman reading this, that first line probably got your attention.

Jared continues, “Sure, we are in the same school program, and you are quite possibly getting the same GPA as I, but does that make us equal? I did not, for example, grow up in a world that discouraged me from focusing on hard science. Nor did I live in a society that told me not to get dirty, or said I was bossy for exhibiting leadership skills.”

His letter continues to applaud the women in his STEM classes for overcoming the odds they faced. He concludes, “So, you and I cannot be equal. You have already conquered far more to be in this field than I will ever face.”

Fighting Against The Odds

Jared had to overcome his own set of odds. He is autistic and he suffers from Lupus and avascular necrosis in both of his hips. As a result, he has had to work much harder than his peers to achieve the same results. Despite having these conditions, he recognizes how hard his female peers have had to work to succeed in the field they’ve chosen.

Since the letter was published, it has gone viral on several social media platforms. One woman commented on The Easterner’s website, “Jared – I’m 59 years old and I got my PhD in physiology more than 30 years ago. Thank you for this. You have reduced this tough-minded old feminist to tears.”

Another comment read, “You nailed it brother! Living under a microscope is not easy. Just having one male peer who “gets” it and has my back makes a world of difference in my everyday work life.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women make up 47% of the total U.S. workforce, but are much less represented in science and engineering occupations. They make up 39% of chemists and material scientists, 28% of environmental scientists and geoscientists, 16% of chemical engineers and just 12% of civil engineers.

Jared told The Huffington Post, “Nothing I said was new, it has all been said a thousand times before. The difference is that I am a man. Maybe by standing up and breaking the silence from the male side, I can help some more men begin to see the issues, and begin to listen to the women who have been speaking about this all along.”
