54-year-old Rogerio Zuniga was a farmer from Lozano, San Benito. He was working on his farm one afternoon, when he accidentally run over an irrigation pipe full of bees with his tractor. Nobody expected what happened next.
A swarm of bees emerged from the pipe and started to attack Rogerio. The first thing he did was to get out of the tractor and run for his life—but the bees had caught up to him. That was when he collapsed, and the killer bees attacked and stung him repeatedly.
According to Rogerio’s sister, Lisa, the aftermath was gruesome—he looked as if he was ‘shredded’ to death. Lisa added that he had gaping wounds, and was no longer conscious when they found him. They brought him to the nearest hospital—but it was all in vain.
The San Benito community and a team of extinguishers came to the site and killed all the bees. Inside the pipe, 20-50 feet of honeycombs were discovered.
People around and in the community are now fearing for the lives—as the same incident might happen again.
