Once in awhile, we see a vexing problem that catches on and spreads like wildfire across social media. Rarely does that problem center on something that can be solved by a first grader, and even rarer is it one that perplexes parents all across the globe.
As AWM shares, this problem falls squarely into that category, and the multiple interpretations it inspires is part of what’s helped it catch on in such a big way. The problem is an actual math problem for a first-grade student in the Jiangsu Province in eastern China, but the consternation is not coming from the wording or numerals in the problem.
In fact, there’s none of the above in the problem, but rather five symbols: a cat, a chicken, a pig, a rabbit and a cow. The problem has led to some pretty hilarious interpretations as people attempt to solve it, and it’s also sparked a big round of overthinking.
“If we look at the question from the number of legs the animal has, then the answer should be the chicken. If we are talking about Chinese animal signs, then it’s indeed the cat,” one user wrote.
